The front face of this pendant represents a Roman charioteer in profile, while the rear depicts the sport itself. Chariot-racing was deeply connected in symbolism to the respect for nature - in fact the chariots raced around a central disc representing the sun. Eggs and dolphins marked the seven circuits that the charioteers made - the first representing Neptune, God of horses and sea; the second being sacred to Castor and Pollux. Charioteers were incredibly hardy and brave - the carried knives on their belts to cut themselves free from their leather reins should they fall from the carriage.
