Aphrodite is typically associated with the colour red, thanks to two flowers. As her lover, Adonis, lay dying, she ran to him, and cut her foot on the thorn of a white rose. Her blood stained its soft petals red. Similarly as Adonis was dying, his blood stained the fronds of an anemone. Their true love is forever immortalised in their stories, and Aphrodites association with symbols of the sea. Here a scallop shell is suspended between white and black freshwater pearls.
